Ara Manzanillo is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and  reintroduction of the Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus) into its natural habitat in  Costa Rica.  This conservation effort began in 2009 with the mission of reintroducing rescued Great Green Macaws into the wild at the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge. This is the first known scientifically controlled reintroduction effort of this species. The goal is to build up a self-sufficient, naturally sustainable and large enough group that will be able to branch out towards the remaining wild populations of Great Greens living in the northern region of Costa Rica and those of central Panama. The Great Green Macaw is classified as a species critically endangered of extinction. To reduce the risk of its disappearance, all efforts to conserve and reintroduce this species are of great importance.

Ara Manzanillo has three main areas of work, each contributing to the survival of the Great Greens: The Macaw Release Program which has successfully  introduced 45 Great Green macaws raised in captivity to fly free; the Assisted Reproduction Program which has developed and placed over 15 artificial nests in mountain almond trees producing over 25 Great Green chicks; and the Community Education Program, which includes school programs and local community activities inspiring a broad awareness of the importance of conserving these emblematic birds and their habitat.
